WMO and NMHS experts from Europe and the USA are involved in the work on hydrological forecasting

On July 14, 2017 the extended session of RSE "Kazgidromet" was held, it was dedicated to the results of activities for 2016 - the first half of 2017. The Chairman of the Environmental Regulation and Supervision Committee of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan (hereinafter - ERSC ME RK) Sabit Nurlybay and responsible executives of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan and of the Water Resources Committee of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan took part in the extended session.

Marat Kynatov, General Director of RSE ”Kazgidromet”, summing up the results of ecological, hydrological and meteorological monitoring, reported on the measures applying to improve the quality of hydrological forecasts: “Earlier, the only method developed in the 80s of the last century was used. We plan to use three methods for hydrological forecasting since 2018, including numerical models for hydrological forecasting. "

"We applied to the World Meteorological Organization. For the first time, the experts from WMO and the national hydrometeorological services of Europe are involved in flood forecasting in Kazakhstan, they are provided advisory and technical support" - M.Kynatov noted.

On July 12-13, 2017 the experts of the World Meteorological Organization and the National Hydrometeorological Service of Italy, together with specialists from the Computing Center and the Hydrology Department of RSE "Kazgidromet" started developing a pilot model of hydrological forecasting using the Arys River as the example.

Also, colleagues from the National Water Center and other specialized organizations of the USA provide advisory and technical support to RSE “Kazgidromet”.

At the extended session, the measures were determined for mutual prompt response together with the ERSC ME RK when revealing high and extremely high pollution in natural environment location.

Besides, the participants got acquainted with the Modernization Program of the RSE "Kazhydromet" for 2017-2020, approved by the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The Modernization Program offers complete equipment of the monitoring network for environmental, meteorological and hydrological monitoring. It is planned, within the Modernization Program, together with RSE "Kazaeronavigatsia" to install 25 meteorological radars to cover the entire territory of Kazakhstan to ensure a higher accuracy of forecasts.
